Kiss Of Death

Above: Mike tells Fredo he knows what he did

Michael and Roth travel to Cuba to forge a partnership with Fulgencio Batista's regime, allowing them to conduct their operations freely. In the midst of the revolution of 1959, Michael discovers that Fredo has betrayed him.

Back home, Kay reveals she has aborted their child because she does not want to bring another son of his into the world. Michael divorces Kay and severs ties with her.

Following the death of their mother, Michael orders Fredo's murder, an act that would haunt him for the rest of his life.

Fredo Gets It

"Michael, why are the drapes open?"

Above: Mike almost gets it himself

By the time of The Godfather Part II (1958 to 1959), Michael has moved to shake off his family's Mafia roots. Frank Pentangeli, a longtime associate of his father's, has taken over the family's operations in New York.

His efforts at going legitimate prove unsuccessful, however, as his enemies keep him involved in the underworld. He begins to work out a deal with business partner and rival Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg) over control of casino operations, but Roth manipulates Michael's brother Fredo (John Cazale) into unwittingly providing him with information used to arrange an attempt on Michael's life.

The Ending To The Best Movie Ever....

Above: The last 8 minutes of The Godfather Part 1 and the new Don takes his rightful place as head of the family

Michael arranges the murders of Barzini and Philip Tattaglia. In the film, he also kills the other two Mafia chiefs, Carmine Cuneo, and Victor Stracci. Also targeted are Greene, Tessio, Fabrizio and Carlo Rizzi (Gianni Russo), his brother-in-law, who plotted with Barzini to have Sonny killed. With this violent attack, Michael cements his reputation and returns the Corleone family to its position as the most powerful crime family in New York.

When his sister Connie (Talia Shire) finds out that Michael had Carlo killed while he stood godfather to their baby, she flies into a rage. Michael dismisses it as hysteria, and when pressed by Kay, denies any involvement in the murder. Just minutes later, however, he meets with his capos, and Clemenza greets him as "Don Corleone." In the film, Clemenza greets Michael as "Don Corleone" and kisses his hand. Unknown to Michael, Kay is watching this meeting, and realizes that Connie was telling the truth after all — and that her husband has become the new Don Corleone.

He's Fair Game Even If He Is A Cop!

Above: In my opinion the greatest Godfather scene of all time

When his father is nearly assassinated in 1945, he volunteers to murder the man responsible, Virgil "The Turk" Sollozzo (Al Lettieri). He also proposes to kill Captain McCluskey (Sterling Hayden), a police captain who removed his father's bodyguards from the hospital, presumably to set up his father to be killed. Although it is normally a hard-and-fast rule in the Mafia that law enforcement officials are not to be harmed, Michael successfully convinces his elder brother Sonny (James Caan) that since McCluskey is serving as Sollozzo's bodyguard, he has crossed into their world and is fair game.

After committing the murders, Michael flees to Sicily under the protection of Don Tommasino, a longtime friend of his father's, and stays in exile for two years

The Don Just... Escapes

Above:Aftermath of the DOn shooting (couldn't find a good vid of the Don getting shot, this also shows how Freddo became such a mess

In 1945, Corleone is nearly assassinated when he refuses the request of Virgil Sollozzo to invest in a heroin operation and use his political contacts for the operation's protection. At the meeting for the request, Sonny asked a question that suggested that unlike his father, he was interested in the offer; after the meeting, Corleone warns his son that he should never let anyone but the family in on his thinking. Corleone is supposed to be driven home by his bodyguard, Paulie Gatto (a soldier in the Clemenza regime), along with his son Fredo. When the Don finds that Paulie is not there, Fredo tells him that Paulie has called in sick that day due to a cold. The Don crosses the street to buy oranges and other fruits from a street vendor. At that time, two of Sollozzo's hitmen come out from the shadows with guns drawn. Realizing the situation, the Don tries to sprint back to his Cadillac but he is shot five times in his thighs and arms. Fredo tries to help his father, but fumbles with his gun and can't get to him in time.

Sonny Gets It

Above: Clip from the movie when Santino gets it!

In retaliation, during the spring of 1948, Tattaglia's partner, Don Emilio Barzini, enlists the help of Sonny's brother-in-law, Carlo Rizzi, in setting a trap for Sonny. Sonny had already given Carlo a savage beating upon learning that Carlo was abusing Connie, unintentionally revealing a weakness. To draw Sonny out into the open, a vengeful Rizzi inflicts a particularly vicious beating on Connie, who telephones Sonny, begging for help. In a fit of rage, Sonny speeds out of the family compound unaccompanied, and heads for Connie's apartment in Hell's Kitchen to confront Rizzi. As Sonny approaches a toll plaza, a number of Barzini's men emerge with Tommy Guns and brutally murder him. As a result, Don Corleone promises not to seek vengeance for his son's death in exchange for stepping down and Michael's safe return home. Later, Michael, who was not part of his father's promise, has all of his opponents assassinated and has Carlo garroted to death in revenge.

Whose story is better the book or the moive?

The movie and the book both have different takes on the character of Johnny Fontane
In the Book/In the Movie

Born in Little Italy, Johnny Fontane grew up with Nino Valenti, who remained his friend. From an early age, Johnny had a talent for singing, and with the help of his godfather, Vito Corleone, he was able to break into showbusiness. After finishing college, he married his childhood sweet heart Ginny, and had two children, but later left her for Hollywood actress Margot Ashton, who turned out to be a whore. This action estranged him from his godfather, who thought the act was highly disrespectful to Johnny's family.

Later, Don Vito visited the bandleader with Luca Brasi, who made him an offer he couldn't refuse (a gun to the head), and Halley signed a release check for one thousand dollars.

It wasn't long after his second marriage fell apart that Johnny started developing a sore throat. His condition worsened until he could barely sing for ten miniutes without suffering a hoarse throat for three days after. With his singing career looking grim, Johnny sought to make it in big movies, not the singing buddy pictures he had done but Oscar-winning blockbusters. Just such a movie was in production, a war film which featured a main character that a perfect part for Johnny and would put him right back on top. There was only one problem: Jack Woltz, the head of the studio, hated Fontane for having made off with one of his mistresses and spitefully refused Johnny the part.

Johnny arrived at Connie's wedding, where he entertained the guests before asking the Don if he could help him secure a part in a new war movie. When negotiations failed to persuade Jack Woltz, the head of the studio, his prize stud horse was decapitated and left in his bed. Johnny was soon granted the part. Aorund this time, his divorce from Ashton came through, and he began to rebuild his relationship with Ginny.

Don Corleone also helped Fontane by helping him win the Academy Award, in return, Johnny made a star out of his old friend Nino, who died from his heavy drinking habits shortly after appearing in a widely sucessful film. At about this time, Johnny had his third marriage to Annie McGowan, the host of a famous puppet show, but this marriage was short lived. He finally settled on Francesca Corleone, daughter of his old friend Sonny Corleone, whom he stayed with for the rest of his life.

Johnny's part in the book goes threw a couple and tells the tale of how Nino and Johnny dealt with the LA lifestyle, the party's, the drinking and in the end when Johnny does win the Oscar and Nino drags him out of the after party, because everyone had decided that the Best Male & Female actors should "Mate" in front of everyone.
